Natural ventilation is the key technology to improve indoor thermal environment and reduce underconsumption of buildings. Based on the characteristics of residential buildings in cities, various factors including wind environment, noise, heat island effect, air pollution, temperature and humidity, floor area ratio window area and openable window area that affect the performance of natural ventilation, are systematical analyzed. Furthermore, this paper proposes a series of design strategies of natural ventilation in residential buildings in terms of optimization of wind environment, design of building layouts, position and form of windows.
