In this paper, the characteristics of atmospheric particulate matter in Beijing are summarized based on the existing research results. The chemical composition of atmospheric particulates is very complex, including a large number of mineral oxides, soluble sulfates, nitrates, sea salts, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organic acids and organic chlorine. Atmospheric particulates play an important role in local, regional and even global atmospheric radiation balance, atmospheric visibility and biochemical cycling of elements, endangering human health and participating in heterogeneous atmospheric reactions. Chemical composition is the key factor determining the environmental effects of atmospheric particulate matter. The characteristics of atmospheric particulate matter are described in five aspects: the definition of atmospheric particulate matter, the influence of climate season, concentration and particle size distribution, and secondary particulate matter.
