The themes of the boundary paintings are mainly derived from the scenes of life in the southern Song Dynasty. Therefore, the boundary painting most can reflect the living environment at that time. Most of the traditional Chinese buildings are wooden structures. But the environment of south area is wet and rainy, the wood is easy to rot. So it is difficult for wooden structure to preserve until now. After thousands of years of development and vicissitude, the urban features (such as architecture, landscape, urban pattern, etc.) of the southern Song Dynasty have disappeared. However, a large number of boundary paintings have been preserved to this day. Especially the southern Song Dynasty is the peak of the development of the boundary painting. All in all, there is no denying the fact that it is indispensable for us to understand the living environment of the southern Song Dynasty through the research of the boundary painting.
