Patented in the 1880s, the expanded metal sheet has a long reputation and has become more popular as a building design features. The flexibility of its applications and the broad availability is making this material one of the designers’ favorite building material. The material is globally promoted, considered, standardized, and industrialized material due to it using benefits. One of the associations that authorize this industry is Expanded Metal Manufacturers Association (EMMA) as a division of the National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers (NAAMM). Besides, its specific characteristic and flexibility functioning widely from cladding to the stair hand railing. This paper describes the recent application of both exterior and interior of expanded metal in contemporary architecture. It compiles the unique characteristics and its function towards architectural matters. The methodology used in this paper is the literature review and exploration processes of the established project that incorporate expanded metal as one of its architectural features. The sources used for this review vary from academic to official sources. The information given in this paper is expected to give an insight into how the expanded metal sheet’s functional contributions have enhanced the architectural fields nowadays.
