According to favorable climatic conditions, passive design can effectively control indoor thermal comfort (ITC). Besides, using the passive elements and space of the building can make indoor microclimate reach the best value of thermal comfort. The article takes the traditional dwellings (TD) in southern Shaanxi as the research object, discusses the effectiveness and adaptability of the passive elements and the passive spaces to the local climate. Using literature review, field investigation and software simulation methods, qualitatively researched architectural elements such as walls, roofs, eaves, floors, doors and windows, and architectural spaces consists of corridors, patios, etc., and analyzed the effectiveness of indoor comfort. By testing temperature, relative humidity, air velocity and illuminance of TD, the effect of the house's adaptation to climate is quantitatively studied. The study indicated that influence of outdoor climate on indoor thermal performance can be improved by adjusting the relevant influencing factors, which is conducive to prolonging indoor thermal comfort time (ITCT). Through simulation calculation, an increase of 4394 hours per year. Through the above analysis and research, it provides design reference for the climate suitability of rural residential buildings in the future.
