Abstract

This paper takes Peking University People’s Hospital in the Xizhimen area of Beijing as a case study, exploring the application of augmented reality (AR) technology in the renewal of hospitals. To address common challenges such as space limitation, outdated plan layouts, and traffic congestion, AR technology is applied to integrate cross-disciplinary data and achieve multi-dimensional digital optimization of the hospital’s surrounding, master plan layout, and interior design. The results show that AR-based design significantly improves spatial efficiency and functional performance while breaking traditional data silos in hospital renovation projects. In the case study, peak-hour traffic congestion was reduced by 35%, space utilization increased by 28%, and the design decision-making cycle was shortened by 40%. To conclude, the study demonstrates that AR technology enhances design efficiency, collaboration, and risk control, providing a practical and replicable model for the digital renewal of hospitals.
